Organic solid waste biological treatment facilities: comparative analysis of process schemes

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The biological treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste represents the most spread strategy to pursue the biological stabilization of this residual stream, under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Anaerobic digestion is an attractive technology for the conversion of organic substrates into methane, but the handling of the residual stream, namely the digestate, can prove to be challenging, especially in those countries where any Regulation has been enforced to discipline its proper use. In order to overcome this drawback, while taking the greatest advantage from the organic solid waste biostabilization in the circular economy view, the proper combination of both aerobic and anaerobic processes can be implemented. At full-scale the combined anaerobic/aerobic treatment entails a high technological complexity, so that the careful monitoring of the overall process is fundamental to ensure its proper development. This study aims at assessing the process performances of full-scale plants, differently combining the anaerobic process with an aerobic step. To this end, mass flow analysis was used, so as to comparatively discuss the yields of complex biological treatment facilities.

Bi-Level Decision-Making Approach for GHG Emissions Control and Municipal Solid Waste Management under Parameter Uncertainty: A Case Study in Beijing, China

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) management significantly contribute to high global warming potential (GWP). However, most studies have failed to facilitate identifying MSW management schemes capable of comprehensively meeting the goals from decision-makers at different hierarchical levels under uncertainties. This study develops an inexact bi-level linear program...

EU Landfill Directive (1999/31/EC) requires the gradual reduction of biodegradable municipal waste going to landfills. In this context, three mechanical-biological treatments (MBT) plants were designed and installed progressively in Barcelona Metropolitan Area (Catalonia, NE Spain) during 2000s. These facilities were intended to solve the problem of municipal wastes generated in this region (Ta...

Integration of Municipal Solid Waste Management in Accra (ghana): Bioreactor Treatment Technology as an Integral Part of the Management Process

The increasing solid waste generated in the Accra metropolis has not been accompanied with adequate sanitation facilities and management programs. Notable among the waste management problems is inadequate operational funding from the municipality’s budget allocation for the collection and disposal processes. The disposal methods mostly depend on the obsolete dumping with the associated environm...

Source analysis of heavy metals and arsenic in organic fractions of municipal solid waste in a mega-city (Shanghai).

Heavy metals and arsenic contamination in municipal solid waste (MSW) and its treatment products has garnered increasing attention. This study investigated the heavy metals and arsenic flows in organic fractions of MSW (OFMSW) in Shanghai, China, through a one-year monitoring program. The OFMSW separated directly from the source (source-separated, pure organic waste), obtained from the treatmen...
